Samsung did provide an update to turn the button off entirely but then you’re left with a silly physical side button which doesn’t do anything, which makes no sense on a smartphone which costs this much.Īsides from my Bixby gripe, this is an excellent and well rounded smartphone and probably makes more sense than the extra cost you would need to pay to get the Galaxy S9+ unless you specifically NEED the extra features that phone brings to the table. Several times I have been in an application or watching a video etc, and I’ve accidentally caught the Bixby button, shutting down my current app to display the Bixby home page. It’s not really much more useful than Google Assistant (which this phone also has) which makes me wonder why Samsung believed it was necessary to have 2 voice assistants built-in?! And to add to that, the Bixby button on the side of the phone is very annoying. I can understand why it’s useful, but unless you really enjoy asking your phone to do tasks you could easily do by touching applications on the screen, it’s quite honestly a redundant feature and in 12 months, Samsung has quite honestly failed to convince me why I should use it. My only real gripe with this smartphone is Bixby. The screen is typical of Samsung, providing an industry leading AMOLED experience with excellent brightness and screen clarity.

Audio is nothing to brag about with the bottom firing mono-speaker being loud but not that balanced when listening to music or watching YouTube videos, although it does have a 3.5mm headphone jack and comes with some very good quality earphones tuned by AKG which is a nice touch. I wouldn’t say that the camera is best in class but if you’re after decent, vibrant and relatively detailed pictures every time then you won’t go far wrong. The camera is reliable in most lighting and there’s a selection of different modes to choose from. If you’re after longevity, I would suggest looking at something better suited for stamina and long periods away from the charger like the Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

I charge my phone every night and after moderate daily usage (2 to 3hrs screen-on time) and 13hrs since the last full charge, I go to bed with about 25% to 30% battery left (sometimes a tiny bit more), which is pretty consistent in my experience. Battery life has been very reasonable but don’t expect to get more than a day’s worth of juice out of this device.

I would say that after 12 months of ownership, I have experienced lag in certain areas of the software experience which in my case, seems to have got slightly worse since the latest update to Android 8.0 Oreo, especially when launching apps such as WhatsApp, but it’s nothing major and not a reason to overly slate this phone. Honestly, you don’t realise how useful the Always On Display can be as well as the LED Notification light until you own a Samsung phone. It has some useful features and I don’t believe that I could ever go to another device which doesn’t have a Always On Display.

In the 12 months of ownership, this phone has served me very well.

Reliable all-round Smartphone! I’ve owned the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus since it’s launch in April 2017 and I can honestly say it does not disappoint.
